Seven Bakers Lane, a small baking company specializing in classic American desserts with a twist
Part blog, part small baking company, Seven Bakers Lane was born out of my lifelong passion for baking. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a degree in Classical Studies and English, and unsure of my career path, I decided to turn my dream of having a “bakery bookstore” into a reality.
From the beginning, it was crucial that Seven Bakers Lane have a great logo, one that fit both my desserts and my vision for the company—fun, tasteful, and imaginative. With the help of a young Spanish designer, we created a stylish and unique mark that included vector graphics. I quickly became a one-woman baking enterprise: creating the name, developing the brand, testing recipes, styling and photographing the pastries, and writing and publishing a blog. My specialty was classic American desserts with a twist. I sold my pastries at local farmer’s markets and fairs, and ran the social media accounts by myself. All of my hard work paid off. I quickly developed a following, so much so that I found it increasingly difficult to meet the demand from my (licensed) home kitchen.
Stage Two was taking Seven Bakers Lane to the next level by opening a brick-and-mortar bakery in Brooklyn. I found a great location in Fort Greene, envisioned what the space would look like, planned an operating budget, and negotiated the lease.
But all of a sudden it dawned on me (if I was being honest with myself) that I was more excited about designing the bakery than I was about baking! In retrospect, my favorite part of the whole process was creating the brand and carrying that brand image through the design of the physical location. What if I could design 10 bakeries? Or restaurants? Or hotels? With that realization, I pivoted away from baking and applied to Parsons for a graduate degree in Interior Design.
One day I hope I will finally open a physical version of Seven Bakers Lane with my newfound knowledge and design talent.
